Performance Max Campaigns

Use Google’s automated, goal-based campaigns to reach customers across its channels, with the strong inputs, controls and measurement automation needs to work well.

One Campaign, Many Channels

Performance Max is a Google Ads campaign type that uses automation to show ads across Google’s inventory, including Search, Shopping, YouTube, Display, Discover, Gmail and Maps, from a single campaign. Instead of building separate campaigns for each channel, advertisers provide a conversion goal, a budget, creative assets such as headlines, descriptions, images, videos and logos, optional audience signals, and for retailers a product feed. Google’s systems then decide where, when and to whom to show ads, aiming to achieve the goal within the budget.

For some businesses, Performance Max can find conversions across channels that would be difficult to reach manually, particularly ecommerce stores with good product feeds and businesses with reliable conversion tracking and sufficient budget. But automation is only as good as its inputs. With weak tracking, poor creative, unclear goals or no controls, Performance Max can spend budget on low-quality placements, take credit for conversions that would have happened anyway, such as branded searches, or optimise for easy actions that do not reflect real business value. Its reporting has historically been less transparent than other campaign types, though Google has added more insights over time.

ViV Softech Solution is a website designing and digital marketing agency based in Delhi. We set up and manage Performance Max campaigns for businesses across India, alongside other campaign types where they make sense. This page explains when Performance Max fits, the inputs that matter, asset groups and signals, controls available, how it works with other campaigns, measurement, and what affects cost. Product feed work is covered by merchant data support, and dedicated Shopping campaigns by Google Shopping Ads.

When Performance Max Fits

Often a good fit

  • Online stores with healthy product feeds and value-based conversion tracking.
  • Businesses with consistent conversion volume that automation can learn from.
  • Advertisers wanting reach across YouTube, Display and Discover without managing each separately.
  • Businesses with physical locations seeking store visits or calls, where store goals are available.

Often not the first step

  • Businesses with very few conversions or unreliable tracking.
  • Very small budgets that cannot support learning across channels.
  • Advertisers needing tight control over exactly which searches trigger ads.
  • Lead generation where lead quality varies widely and is not fed back into Google Ads.

In these cases, we usually start with Search campaigns and add Performance Max once foundations are in place.

Goals and Conversion Quality

Performance Max optimises towards the conversions you tell it to value, so choosing and measuring them carefully is essential. For ecommerce, purchases with accurate transaction values allow bidding to maximise revenue or target a return on ad spend. For lead generation, counting every form submission equally can push the system towards cheap, low-quality leads, including spam. Better approaches include tracking only qualified actions, assigning different values to different conversion types, and importing offline conversions from your CRM to show which leads became customers, so automation learns what genuinely matters. New customer acquisition goals can also be set where available, to place more value on reaching people who have not bought before. We review conversion settings thoroughly before launch, because getting this wrong undermines everything else. See conversion tracking and lead quality analysis.

Asset Groups and Creative

Within a Performance Max campaign, asset groups bundle creative assets around a theme, such as a product category, service line or audience. Each group contains multiple headlines, long headlines, descriptions, images in several aspect ratios, logos and videos. Google combines these into ads for each channel. Providing a full, varied set of high-quality assets gives the system more to work with and improves performance across placements.

If you do not provide videos, Google may generate basic videos automatically from your images, which may not reflect your brand well, so we recommend supplying your own. We organise asset groups so messaging matches the products or services they promote, and use asset performance insights to replace weak assets over time. Creative must be accurate and compliant with policies. Our design and video teams can produce assets where needed.

Audience Signals and Search Themes

Audience signals are suggestions that help Performance Max start learning faster: your customer lists, website visitors, custom segments based on search behaviour or competitor websites, and relevant interest audiences. They are not strict targeting; the system can and does go beyond them when it predicts conversions elsewhere. Search themes, where available, let advertisers provide additional information about the kinds of searches relevant to their business. Strong signals, built from your own data and clear understanding of your customers, generally lead to better early performance and reduce wasted spend during the learning period. We create and refine signals for each asset group based on research and performance data.

Controls and Guardrails

Brand exclusions

Prevent Performance Max from serving on searches for your own brand where you prefer a separate brand Search campaign, so results are not inflated by customers who would have found you anyway.

Negative keywords and exclusions

Google has introduced ways to exclude unwanted searches and placements in Performance Max. We use the available options to block irrelevant queries and unsuitable content.

URL and product controls

Final URL expansion settings and listing group filters control which pages and products the campaign can use, preventing traffic to irrelevant pages.

Available controls change as Google updates the product, and we keep campaigns aligned with the latest options.

Working Alongside Other Campaigns

Performance Max often runs together with other campaign types. Search campaigns targeting exact keywords can coexist, with Google generally prioritising exact keyword matches in Search campaigns over Performance Max for identical queries. Standard Shopping and Performance Max for the same products need careful planning because they compete for the same inventory. Brand Search campaigns, protected by brand exclusions in Performance Max, keep brand performance clear. Remarketing in Performance Max can overlap with Display remarketing campaigns. We design the account structure so campaigns complement rather than cannibalise each other, and we monitor how traffic and conversions shift when Performance Max is introduced, comparing total account results rather than judging each campaign in isolation.

Measurement and Reporting

We use the reporting Google provides, including insights into search term categories, asset performance, audience insights and, where available, performance by channel, together with Google Analytics and your own sales or CRM data. Because Performance Max can claim credit for conversions influenced by other channels or for branded searches, we look carefully at incremental impact: comparing total account and business results before and after launch, checking brand exclusions, and where budgets allow, testing with and without the campaign.

Reports focus on business outcomes such as revenue, return on ad spend, cost per qualified lead and new customers, explained in plain language, with honest discussion of what the data can and cannot show. Performance Max typically needs a learning period of several weeks after launch or significant changes, during which results may fluctuate. We avoid frequent major changes that would restart learning unnecessarily.

Our Process

1. Readiness check: tracking, conversion volume, budget and feed quality. 2. Goals: conversions and values that reflect business outcomes. 3. Account design: how Performance Max fits with other campaigns. 4. Assets: complete, high-quality creative per asset group. 5. Signals: audience signals and search themes. 6. Controls: brand exclusions, negatives, URL and product settings. 7. Launch and learn: monitor without disruptive changes. 8. Optimise and report: assets, signals, structure and incremental results.

What Affects Cost

  • Ad spend, paid to Google.
  • Number of asset groups and products.
  • Creative production, including video.
  • Tracking and offline conversion setup.
  • Management and reporting depth.
