News SEO, Where Relevant

Technical and editorial SEO for genuine news publishers, newsrooms and media brands that want their reporting found quickly in news-focused search features.

Is News SEO Right for You?

News SEO is a specialist discipline for organisations that publish timely, original news reporting: digital newspapers, regional news portals, magazine websites, trade and industry publications, and newsrooms of larger organisations. For these publishers, a large share of traffic can come from news-focused search experiences, such as Top Stories carousels in Google Search, the Google News app and website, and Google Discover feeds on mobile. These surfaces reward speed, freshness, credibility and clear signals about what each article covers and when it was published.

For most businesses, news SEO is not the right priority. A company blog that publishes occasional updates about its products, a service business sharing industry news, or a website posting press releases is not a news publisher in the sense that news surfaces are designed for, and investing in news-specific optimisation would bring little benefit. That is why we describe this service as relevant only where appropriate. For such businesses, our SEO blog strategy or digital PR services are usually a better fit.

ViV Softech Solution is a website designing and digital marketing agency based in Delhi. We support news publishers in India with technical and editorial SEO. This page explains how news surfaces work, the technical foundations publishers need, editorial practices that build trust and visibility, Google Discover, regional language news, common problems, measurement and what affects cost. We do not and cannot guarantee inclusion in any news feature, which is decided algorithmically by search engines.

How News Surfaces Work

Google’s news-related features select content algorithmically. Google has said there is no application process required for its news surfaces; publishers become eligible by producing content that meets Google News content policies and general search guidelines. Factors Google describes as important include relevance to the query or user, prominence of the story, authoritativeness and trustworthiness of the source, freshness, and usability of the page. Original reporting and transparency about who is behind a publication are valued. Policies prohibit dangerous content, deceptive practices, manipulated media, misleading headlines and other harmful material, and some topics such as health, finance and elections receive additional scrutiny. Because selection is automatic and competition for breaking stories is intense, technical speed and editorial credibility work together. Google Publisher Center remains available for publishers to manage certain settings, but it is not a guarantee of inclusion.

Technical Foundations for Publishers

Fast discovery

News sitemaps list articles published in the last two days, helping search engines find new content quickly. Standard XML sitemaps, clear category and latest news pages, and strong internal links from the home page support discovery. RSS feeds can also help.

Article structured data

NewsArticle or Article markup describes headline, images, publication and modification dates, and author details. It must match visible content and be accurate. See structured data validation.

Dates and times

Clear published and updated timestamps, with time zones, displayed on the page and in markup. Updating dates without meaningful changes is misleading and can harm trust.

Performance

Article templates must load quickly and remain stable on mobile, despite advertising, embeds and analytics scripts. Reserved ad slots, optimised images and controlled third-party scripts protect Core Web Vitals. See Core Web Vitals optimization.

Crawlability

Article content available in HTML, sensible handling of paywalls with appropriate markup, and clean URL structures for articles, tags and sections.

Editorial Practices That Support Visibility

  • Clear, accurate headlines that describe the story without exaggeration or clickbait.
  • Original reporting and analysis, rather than rewriting other outlets’ stories.
  • Bylines and author pages showing real journalists’ expertise and contact information.
  • Transparency pages: ownership, editorial policies, corrections policy and contact details.
  • Visible corrections when errors are found.
  • Distinguishing news from opinion and sponsored content, with clear labels.
  • Consistent topic coverage that builds authority in specific beats or regions.
  • Updating developing stories on the same URL where appropriate, with clear update notes.
  • Evergreen explainers linked from news articles to give context and capture longer-term search traffic.

Digital news publishers in India also have obligations under applicable regulations, including codes of ethics for digital media, which should be confirmed with legal advisers.

Google Discover

Google Discover shows a personalised feed of articles on mobile devices based on users’ interests, without them searching. It can drive significant traffic for publishers, but it is volatile and difficult to predict. Google’s guidance for Discover emphasises high-quality, engaging content, compelling but accurate titles, large high-quality images that are at least 1200 pixels wide and allowed through appropriate settings, and avoiding clickbait or sensationalism. Content that follows Discover policies, demonstrates expertise and is published regularly on topics the audience cares about tends to perform better over time. We review image handling, title practices and content patterns to support Discover visibility, while stressing that traffic from it can rise and fall sharply and should not be relied on as the only channel.

Regional and Language News

India has a vibrant ecosystem of Hindi and regional language news publishers, and readers increasingly consume news in their own languages. For language publishers, technical correctness is essential: proper language declarations, Unicode text rather than images of text, suitable fonts for scripts, and correct handling of language versions if the site publishes in several languages.

Headlines and descriptions should be written natively, not machine translated. Local and hyperlocal publishers can build authority through consistent coverage of their region, original reporting on local events, and clear signals about the areas they cover. See multilingual SEO and multilingual technical setup.

Common Problems We Find

  • Slow article pages overloaded with ads, pop-ups and scripts.
  • Missing or inaccurate dates in markup or on the page.
  • Duplicate articles under multiple URLs, such as AMP, print or tag paths without proper canonicals.
  • Thin rewritten stories that add nothing to coverage elsewhere.
  • Misleading or sensational headlines that conflict with policies.
  • No author information or transparency pages.
  • Tag pages and archives creating large numbers of low-value indexable pages.
  • Images too small or blocked for use in Discover and Top Stories.
  • Sponsored content not labelled clearly.

Measuring News Performance

Search and News Reports

Search Console performance filtered for news search and Google News.

Discover Reports

Discover impressions and clicks where eligible.

Speed to Index

How quickly new articles are discovered and indexed.

We combine these with analytics on engaged readers, returning visitors and subscriptions to judge real audience value, not just spikes in traffic.

Our Process

1. Fit check: confirm news SEO is appropriate for your publication. 2. Technical audit: sitemaps, markup, dates, canonicals, speed and crawlability. 3. Editorial review: headlines, bylines, transparency and labelling. 4. Fix plan: prioritised technical and editorial recommendations. 5. Implementation support: with your developers and editors. 6. Newsroom guidelines: practical SEO checklist for journalists. 7. Monitor: Search Console, Discover and indexing speed. 8. Review: regular check-ins as news patterns change.

What Affects Cost
