Link Profile Audit

Understand exactly which websites link to you, how valuable and relevant those links are, where risks exist and what to do next.

Your Backlinks Tell a Story About Your Website

Links from other websites remain one of the ways search engines discover pages and assess how well regarded a website is. A link from a respected industry publication, a local news site, a professional association or a trusted supplier signals that others find your business worth referencing. Links from spammy directories, unrelated foreign websites, link networks or paid placements tell a very different story, and Google’s spam policies specifically address link schemes intended to manipulate rankings.

Over the years, most websites accumulate a mix: genuine links earned naturally, links from partners and directories, links from old campaigns by previous agencies, scraped copies of your content, and links from automated spam sites that point to almost everyone. Many business owners have no idea what their link profile looks like, whether past link building created risks, which valuable links have been lost, or how their profile compares with competitors. A link profile audit answers these questions with evidence rather than guesswork.

ViV Softech Solution is a website designing and digital marketing agency based in Delhi. We audit link profiles for businesses across India. This page focuses on a detailed, link-level review of your backlinks. A broader overview of your off-site presence, including brand mentions, citations and reputation, is covered by our off-page SEO audit, and investigating suspected attacks or toxic link problems in depth by our spam link investigation service. Below we explain the data sources we use, what we evaluate, how we classify links, when disavowing is and is not appropriate, competitor benchmarking, what you receive and what affects cost.

What the Audit Reveals

Complete Inventory

All known linking domains and pages, combined from several data sources.

Your Strongest Links

The relevant, trusted sources that genuinely support your website.

Risky Patterns

Links that look manipulative, paid or part of schemes.

Lost and Broken Links

Valuable links that disappeared or point to pages that no longer exist.

Anchor Text Profile

How people describe your site when they link, and whether it looks natural.

Competitive Position

How your profile compares with the sites you compete against.

Data Sources

No single tool sees every link on the web. Google Search Console provides a sample of the links Google knows about, including top linking sites, top linked pages and anchor text, directly from Google’s own data. Third-party backlink tools crawl the web independently and offer more detail, such as when links were found or lost, the context of each link and estimated authority scores, but each tool’s index is different and incomplete.

We combine Search Console data with one or more third-party tools to build the most complete inventory practical, then remove duplicates and group links by referring domain. Authority scores from tools are useful indicators but are not Google metrics, so we treat them as one signal among many rather than a verdict. Where there are questions about specific links, we visit the linking pages to see them in context, as automated classifications are often wrong.

What We Evaluate for Each Link

  • Relevance: is the linking site related to your industry, location or audience?
  • Quality and trust: is it a real website with genuine content and visitors, or a thin site built for links?
  • Context: is the link placed naturally within useful content, or in a footer, sidebar or list of unrelated links?
  • Anchor text: brand name, URL, generic phrases or exact-match keywords.
  • Link attributes: followed, nofollow, sponsored or user-generated content.
  • Target page: which of your pages it points to, and whether that page still exists.
  • Origin: earned naturally, partnership, directory, press coverage, past campaign or unknown.
  • Patterns: sudden spikes, many links from one network, foreign-language spam or sitewide links.

How We Classify Links

Valuable

Relevant, trusted, editorially given links worth protecting and building on.

Neutral

Low-value but harmless links, such as scraper copies or random directories, which search engines generally ignore.

Concerning

Links that appear to be paid, exchanged or part of schemes, especially if you or a past agency created them.

Most websites have a large neutral group. Google has stated that its systems are good at ignoring random spammy links that site owners did not create, so the presence of low-quality links alone is not usually a cause for alarm. Our focus is on patterns that could genuinely matter and on opportunities to strengthen your profile.

Disavowing: When It Helps and When It Does Not

Google’s disavow tool lets site owners ask Google to ignore specific links or domains. Google advises that most sites do not need it, and that it is intended mainly for cases where a site has a significant number of spammy, artificial or low-quality links that the site owner created or paid for, which have caused or could cause a manual action. Disavowing carelessly can remove the benefit of good links. Our approach is cautious: if you have a manual action for unnatural links in Search Console, we identify the links involved, attempt removal where practical, document the process and prepare a disavow file and reconsideration request. If you have a history of paid or scheme-based link building and want to reduce risk, we review those links specifically. If your profile simply contains the usual background spam, we generally recommend no disavow at all. Every recommendation is explained so you understand the reasoning.

Lost Links, Broken Targets and Quick Wins

Links to broken pages

When pages are deleted or URLs change without redirects, external links pointing to them lead to errors and their value is lost. The audit lists your pages that receive external links but return 404 errors, so they can be redirected to the most relevant live page. This is often one of the quickest wins available.

Lost and unlinked mentions

We identify valuable links that have disappeared, for example when a partner redesigned their site, and mentions of your brand without a link. Polite outreach can often recover these. See our link reclamation service and redirect and 404 error management.

Anchor Text and Distribution

In a natural link profile, most anchor text is your brand name, website address or generic phrases such as visit website or read more, with a smaller share describing your services. A profile dominated by exact-match commercial keywords, such as best dental clinic in Delhi repeated across many sites, suggests manipulation and is a common legacy of old link building tactics. We analyse anchor text distribution and flag unnatural concentrations. We also look at which of your pages receive links: if almost all links point to the home page while important service or product pages have none, that informs future content and outreach plans. Links spread across helpful resources, service pages and the home page indicate a healthier profile.

Benchmarking Against Competitors

A link profile is easier to interpret in context. We compare yours with several competitors that rank well for your priority searches: the number of genuine linking domains, the types of sites linking to them, their most linked pages, and relevant sources that link to several competitors but not to you. This shows whether links are likely to be a limiting factor for your visibility and highlights realistic opportunities, such as an industry association, a local publication or a resource page where you could legitimately earn a mention. We ignore competitor links that come from obvious schemes, because copying risky tactics is not a sustainable strategy. Detailed competitor link research is also available as our competitor backlink analysis service.

Frequently Asked Questions

Google says its systems usually ignore random spammy links. Links you created or paid for as part of schemes are a greater concern.

Not automatically. Tool scores are not Google metrics, and most sites do not need to disavow. We review links in context first.

No tool sees every link. Combining Search Console with third-party tools gives the most complete practical picture.

This is a detailed link-by-link review. The off-page audit is a broader look at your off-site presence.

Typically once or twice a year, or after a sudden ranking drop, migration or manual action.

No. Buying links to manipulate rankings breaches Google’s spam policies. We focus on earning genuine links.
