Spam Link Investigation

Get a calm, evidence-based investigation when you suspect spammy links are harming your website, whether from a past campaign, a manual action or a possible attack.

When Links Become a Problem

Business owners often come to us worried about spam links. Perhaps an SEO tool reported thousands of toxic backlinks. Perhaps rankings fell suddenly and someone suggested a competitor was attacking the site. Perhaps a previous agency bought links or used link networks years ago, and the business is concerned about lasting risk. Or perhaps Google Search Console shows a manual action for unnatural links, which is a serious, confirmed problem requiring a structured response.

These situations need careful diagnosis rather than panic. Google has stated that its systems are good at recognising and ignoring random spammy links that site owners did not create, and that most sites do not need to take action on them. Tool-generated toxicity scores are estimates, not Google assessments. Ranking drops usually have other causes, such as algorithm updates, technical problems, content issues or competition. On the other hand, a genuine manual action, or a history of paid links and schemes created on the site’s behalf, does need attention. The skill lies in separating real risks from noise.

ViV Softech Solution is a website designing and digital marketing agency based in Delhi. We investigate spam link concerns for businesses across India. This page focuses on investigating specific link-related problems. A routine, complete review of your backlinks is covered by our link profile audit. Below we explain the situations we investigate, how we diagnose them, how manual actions are handled, when disavowing is appropriate, how suspected negative SEO is approached, what you receive and what affects cost.

Situations We Investigate

Unnatural Links Manual Action

A confirmed notice in Search Console requiring cleanup and a reconsideration request.

Legacy Link Schemes

Paid links, networks or mass guest posts created by past agencies or staff.

Suspected Negative SEO

Sudden floods of spammy links you did not create, with concern about an attack.

Unexplained Ranking Drops

Losses where links are suspected but other causes have not been ruled out.

Hacked Site Links

Spam links injected into your own site, or spam pages created on it, after a security breach.

Alarming Tool Reports

Third-party tools flagging many toxic links that need interpretation.

How We Diagnose the Problem

Check the facts first

We start with Google Search Console: whether any manual action is listed, what the security issues report shows, and what the links report reveals. We establish a timeline of traffic and ranking changes and compare it with known search algorithm updates, website changes, migrations, technical problems and competitive shifts. Many suspected link problems turn out to have other causes, and identifying the true cause avoids wasted effort.

Understand your link history

We ask about past SEO work, agencies used, and any link buying, exchanges, networks or guest posting campaigns, because links created on your behalf are treated differently from random spam.

Analyse the links

We gather backlink data from Search Console and third-party tools, examine new links over time for unusual spikes, and review linking domains, anchor text and patterns. Suspicious links are checked manually in context, since automated toxicity labels are often wrong.

Check your own site

Hacked websites sometimes contain hidden outbound spam links or pages created by attackers. We scan for injected links, cloaked content and unexpected pages, because cleaning your own site is essential before addressing external links. See malware cleanup and recovery.

Handling an Unnatural Links Manual Action

A manual action means a member of Google’s team has reviewed your site and determined that some links pointing to it, or from it, violate spam policies. It is visible in Search Console and can affect specific pages or the whole site. Recovery requires a genuine, documented cleanup effort:

  • Identify problematic links: paid links, link exchanges, network links, keyword-stuffed guest posts, widget or footer links and similar patterns, using all available data.
  • Attempt removal: contact site owners to request removal or the addition of nofollow attributes, recording every attempt and response.
  • Disavow what cannot be removed: prepare a disavow file for remaining problematic links and domains, carefully reviewed to avoid disavowing good links.
  • Stop the cause: end any ongoing link buying or schemes, and fix outbound link issues on your own site if the action concerns them.
  • Reconsideration request: a clear, honest explanation of what happened, what was done, and evidence of the cleanup.

Google reviews reconsideration requests on its own timeline and may request further work. We cannot guarantee approval, but a thorough, transparent cleanup gives the best chance of success.

Legacy Link Schemes Without a Manual Action

Many businesses have links created by previous agencies using tactics that are now clearly against guidelines: bought links on unrelated sites, private blog networks, mass directory submissions, article spinning or keyword-rich guest posts. Even without a manual action, these links may already be discounted by Google’s systems and contribute little. Whether to clean them up depends on their scale and nature. Where there is a large, clear footprint of links you or your agency paid for or arranged, reducing risk by requesting removal and disavowing what remains can be sensible, especially before investing in new SEO. Where the legacy links are few or ambiguous, we may recommend leaving them and focusing on building a stronger, genuine profile. We also make sure any ongoing arrangements, such as monthly link packages, are stopped. Our recommendation is explained clearly, including the trade-offs, so you can decide.

Suspected Negative SEO

Negative SEO refers to attempts by others to harm a site’s rankings, for example by pointing large numbers of spammy links at it. Seeing a sudden flood of links from strange foreign sites, adult pages or link farms can be alarming. In most cases, Google’s systems ignore such links, and they do not cause ranking problems. Many sites receive spammy links constantly without any effect.

We investigate by checking whether the timing of any ranking change actually coincides with the link spike, whether other explanations fit better, and whether there are signs of other attacks, such as fake reviews, content scraping, hacking attempts or false reports. If there is a genuine, unusual pattern alongside a clear impact, a targeted disavow of the obvious spam domains may be a reasonable precaution. Otherwise, we usually advise monitoring rather than action, and focusing on improving your site.

Disavowing Responsibly

When It Is Appropriate

Manual actions, or significant links created through schemes on your behalf that cannot be removed.

When It Is Not

Routine background spam, or links flagged only by tool scores without review.

How We Prepare It

Reviewed domain by domain, documented, and kept for future updates.

Disavowing good links by mistake removes their value, so mass disavows based on automated lists are risky. If a disavow file already exists, we review it as part of the investigation, as overly broad files created by previous providers sometimes do more harm than good.

Outbound Spam and Your Own Website

Spam link problems can also originate on your own site. Comment sections and forums can fill with spam links if not moderated; user profiles can be abused; old sponsored posts may contain followed paid links without proper attributes; and hacked websites may have hidden links or entire spam sections injected by attackers. Google can take manual action for unnatural outbound links or for site-wide spam caused by hacking. As part of the investigation, we check outbound links across your site, recommend appropriate attributes for sponsored and user-generated links, suggest moderation and anti-spam measures, and, where hacking is suspected, coordinate cleanup and security hardening. See security hardening.

Frequently Asked Questions

Google says its systems usually ignore such links. We investigate whether there is any evidence of real impact before recommending action.

Not necessarily. Tool scores are estimates. We review links in context and assess real risk.

It depends on the cleanup required and Google’s review time. Some requests need more than one round.

Only in specific situations, such as manual actions or significant legacy schemes. It is not a general ranking tool.

Stop any ongoing arrangements, then let us assess the scale and recommend whether cleanup is warranted.

The audit is a routine review of all links. This investigation focuses on specific suspected problems, manual actions and attacks.
