Google Search Console Setup

See how Google finds, indexes and shows your website, which searches bring visitors, and which issues need fixing, with Search Console set up and explained properly.

Google’s Own View of Your Website

Google Search Console is a free tool from Google that shows how your website performs in Google Search. While analytics tools tell you what visitors do after they arrive, Search Console tells you what happens before they click: which search queries your pages appear for, how often they are shown, how many people click, and the average position. It also reports whether Google can crawl and index your pages, flags technical problems such as pages excluded from the index, mobile usability issues, Core Web Vitals performance, structured data errors, security problems and manual actions, and lets you submit sitemaps and request indexing of new or updated pages.

Despite being free and essential, Search Console is often missing, incorrectly verified, connected to the wrong version of a website, or set up years ago by someone who no longer works with the business. Even where it exists, many owners never look at it because the reports seem technical and confusing. As a result, serious problems such as important pages dropping out of Google’s index, a broken sitemap, a sudden fall in clicks or a security warning can go unnoticed for months.

ViV Softech Solution is a website designing and digital marketing agency in Delhi, and we set up and monitor Google Search Console for businesses across India as part of our analytics setup services. Fixing the technical problems it reveals is covered by our indexing and crawling issue resolution and wider technical SEO services; visitor behaviour tracking is covered by Google Analytics 4 setup.

Correct Verification and Ownership

Search Console offers two property types. A domain property, verified through a DNS record at your domain registrar, covers every version of your site: with and without www, HTTP and HTTPS, and all subdomains. A URL-prefix property covers only one specific version. We usually recommend a domain property for complete data, adding URL-prefix properties where useful for specific sections or legacy setups.

Ownership matters. The verified owner should be an account controlled by your business, not a freelancer’s personal email, so you never lose access when people change. We add agencies, developers and staff as users with the appropriate permission level, and remove access for people who no longer need it. If an old property exists under someone else’s account, we help you regain access through Google’s verification process.

Understanding the Key Reports

Search Console contains several reports, and knowing which ones matter for your business makes the tool far less intimidating. The Performance report is usually the most valuable for owners: it shows the search queries that triggered your pages, with impressions, clicks, click-through rate and average position, filterable by page, country, device and date. It reveals which topics already bring visibility, which pages attract clicks, and where pages appear often but receive few clicks, which can signal an opportunity to improve titles and meta descriptions. The Page Indexing report shows how many pages Google has indexed and lists reasons others are not indexed, such as being blocked by robots.txt, marked noindex, duplicates without a chosen canonical, redirects, soft 404 errors, server errors, or crawled but not yet indexed. Not every excluded page is a problem, since duplicates and redirected URLs are often meant to be excluded, so interpretation matters. The Sitemaps report confirms Google can read your submitted sitemaps and how many URLs it discovered. The URL Inspection tool shows the indexing status of a specific page, how Google last crawled it, and lets you request indexing after significant updates. Experience reports cover Core Web Vitals, measuring real-user loading, interactivity and visual stability, and HTTPS status. Enhancements reports show structured data detected on your site, such as breadcrumbs, FAQs, products or reviews, with any errors. The Security Issues and Manual Actions sections alert you to hacking, malware or penalties for guideline violations, which require urgent attention. Links reports show which sites link to you and your most-linked pages. We explain these reports in plain language and highlight the ones requiring action.

Common Issues Search Console Reveals

Pages not indexed

Important pages missing from Google’s index.

Sitemap errors

Broken, outdated or unreadable sitemaps.

Redirect and 404 problems

Broken links and redirect chains after site changes.

Accidental noindex

Pages blocked from search unintentionally.

Slow page experience

Poor Core Web Vitals on key templates.

Structured data errors

Invalid schema markup on pages.

We identify and prioritise these issues; fixes are handled through services such as XML sitemap optimisation, redirect and 404 management and Core Web Vitals optimisation.

Search Console During Website Changes

Website launches, redesigns, migrations and domain changes are the moments when search visibility is most at risk. Search Console provides the evidence needed to manage them: baseline data before changes, sitemap submission for the new structure, the Change of Address tool when moving domains, and close monitoring of indexing and errors afterwards.

Watching coverage and performance reports in the weeks after a change helps catch problems such as missing redirects or blocked pages early, before they cause lasting losses. If you are planning a move, see website migration services.
