Catalogue and Product Ads

Show the right products to the right people on Facebook and Instagram, powered by a clean, accurate product catalogue and reliable event tracking.

Advertising Products at Scale

For businesses selling many products, creating individual ads for each item is impractical. Catalogue ads, sometimes called dynamic product ads, solve this by connecting a product catalogue to Meta and letting Facebook and Instagram automatically assemble ads from your product images, titles, prices and links. Meta then decides which products to show to which people based on their behaviour, such as items they viewed on your site, products similar to those they bought, or items likely to interest new prospects. A store with a few dozen or many thousands of products can advertise its whole range with a manageable number of campaigns.

The quality of catalogue ads depends almost entirely on the quality of the catalogue and the tracking connected to it. If product titles are vague, images are poor, prices are out of date or out-of-stock items keep appearing, ads perform badly and can disappoint customers. If the product IDs sent by your website’s Pixel do not match the IDs in your catalogue, Meta cannot connect browsing behaviour to products, and retargeting fails. Much of the work behind successful catalogue advertising is therefore careful, unglamorous data work.

ViV Softech Solution is a website designing and digital marketing agency in Delhi. We set up and manage Meta catalogues and product ads for ecommerce stores, marketplace sellers with their own websites, and businesses with product-like listings such as property, travel packages and vehicles, across India. This page focuses on catalogue setup and product ad management; for broader sales campaign strategy, see sales and conversion campaigns.

Connecting Your Catalogue

Platform integrations

Shopify, WooCommerce and several other platforms have official or partner integrations that sync products to Meta automatically. Usually the simplest and most reliable option.

Data feed files

A spreadsheet or XML feed hosted at a URL, fetched on a schedule. Useful for custom websites or when more control over product data is needed.

Pixel-based or manual

Catalogues built from Pixel data on product pages, or added manually for small ranges. Simpler, but usually less complete.

Whichever method suits your website, the goal is the same: a catalogue that updates automatically, so prices and stock in your ads match your store. We set the update frequency based on how often your products change, check the catalogue for errors in Commerce Manager, and connect it to your ad account, Pixel and, where relevant, your Facebook and Instagram shops. See ecommerce website development.

Product Data That Performs

Every product in a catalogue needs certain fields, including a unique ID, title, description, availability, condition, price, link and image. Beyond meeting requirements, quality matters. Titles should describe the product clearly, including key attributes such as brand, type, material, size or colour, rather than internal codes. Descriptions should be accurate and helpful. Prices must match the landing page exactly, including sale prices where used. Availability should reflect real stock.

Images have a large effect on results. Clean, well-lit product images at a suitable resolution are essential, and additional images, such as lifestyle shots or alternate angles, give Meta more options. Variants such as sizes and colours should be grouped correctly with an item group ID. Optional fields, such as product type, Google product category, brand and custom labels, help with organisation and product sets. We audit catalogues for missing, inconsistent or rejected items and fix issues at the source where possible.

Matching Events to Products

For catalogue ads to retarget people with the products they viewed, Meta needs to know which product each person interacted with. This happens through standard events such as ViewContent, AddToCart and Purchase, sent by the Meta Pixel and Conversions API with content IDs that exactly match the IDs in your catalogue. A common problem is a mismatch, for example the website sending a variant ID while the catalogue uses a parent SKU, or different formatting between systems. Commerce Manager and Events Manager show match rates between events and catalogue items, and low match rates mean many visitors cannot be retargeted with relevant products. We check and fix these connections as part of setup. See Pixel and Conversions API setup support.

Product Sets and Campaign Structure

Product sets are filtered groups within a catalogue, such as a category, a price range, a brand, bestsellers, new arrivals or high-margin items. They let you run separate campaigns or ad sets for different groups, apply different budgets, exclude certain products from advertising, or tailor creative to a category. Custom labels in your feed, for example marking margin bands or seasonal items, make product sets more flexible.

We usually keep structure simple at first, often one campaign covering the full catalogue or main categories, then split out product sets where data shows meaningful differences, such as a category with much higher margins or a seasonal range that needs dedicated budget. Out-of-stock and low-margin products can be excluded so budget focuses on items that are available and profitable to sell.

Catalogue Ad Types

Retargeting

Showing people products they viewed or added to cart, plus related items.

Prospecting

Showing relevant products to new people likely to be interested.

Cross-Sell

Showing complementary products to recent buyers.

Advantage+ catalogue ads combine these approaches automatically, letting Meta decide who sees which product. Formats include carousels, single images, collection ads that open into an Instant Experience storefront, and video options generated from product images. We compare automated and more controlled setups for your account. See also Meta retargeting campaigns.

Making Product Ads Stand Out

Plain product images on white backgrounds can look similar to every other store’s ads. Meta offers creative options to help: catalogue frames that add a consistent border or brand element, overlays showing price, discount or free delivery information, dynamic text that pulls product details into the ad copy, and the option to show lifestyle images or videos from the catalogue alongside product shots. Collection ads can pair a lead video or image with product tiles. We use these enhancements carefully, keeping overlays accurate and readable, and test them against plain versions. Any discount or delivery claim must reflect the actual offer on your website, and we avoid overlays that obscure the product or break Meta’s advertising standards.

Product-Level Reporting

Catalogue campaigns can be broken down by product in Ads Manager, showing which items attract spend, clicks and purchases. This reveals products that receive budget but rarely sell, perhaps because of price, images or availability, and products that sell well and might deserve more prominence. We combine this with your store data on margins, returns and stock levels to recommend changes.

Typical improvements include rewriting titles for poorly performing products, replacing weak images, excluding products with high return rates or low margins, creating product sets for strong categories, and coordinating promotions with stock. As with all Meta reporting, attributed sales should be compared with your own order data, and we explain differences in attribution clearly.

Beyond Retail Products

Meta catalogues are not limited to physical products. Catalogue types exist for travel, such as hotels, flights and destinations, for vehicles and for home listings, though availability varies by country and some types are restricted or being changed. Property and other listings may also fall under special ad categories with targeting restrictions. Where a dedicated catalogue type is not available, some businesses with structured listings, such as courses or service packages, can use a standard catalogue where it complies with Meta’s commerce policies. We check what is currently supported for your business before recommending an approach.
