Google Analytics 4 Setup

A Google Analytics 4 property configured around the actions that matter to your business, connected to your advertising, and reporting numbers you can trust.

Installed Is Not the Same as Configured

Google Analytics 4 is the current version of Google’s free web and app analytics, having replaced Universal Analytics. Many websites have GA4 installed, often added by a plugin or developer during a site build, but far fewer have it configured to answer real business questions. A default installation records page views and some automatic events, such as scrolls and outbound clicks, but it does not know which actions matter to you, whether form submissions were successful, what an order was worth, which visitors came from your staff or developers, or how to connect website behaviour to your Google Ads campaigns. The result is reports full of numbers that nobody uses, or worse, numbers that mislead.

A proper GA4 setup starts with your business goals and works backwards: which actions represent value, how they should be recorded, which reports and audiences you need, how GA4 should connect with Google Ads and Search Console, how long data should be retained, and how consent and privacy are handled. It also involves cleaning out noise, such as internal traffic and spam, so the data reflects real customers.

ViV Softech Solution is a website designing and digital marketing agency in Delhi. We set up and audit Google Analytics 4 for websites and online stores across India. This page explains ownership, data streams, key events, ecommerce tracking, cross-domain setup, filters, retention, integrations, consent and reporting. Tag implementation through Google Tag Manager is covered on our Google Tag Manager setup page.

Property, Data Streams and Basic Settings

GA4 is organised into accounts, properties and data streams. Your business should own the account, created under a Google account your organisation controls, with agencies given access through user roles you can remove. A property usually represents one website or app, or a website and app together, and each property can have web and app data streams. We set the correct reporting time zone and currency, so revenue and daily figures align with your business, and name everything clearly.

Enhanced measurement automatically tracks events such as scrolls, outbound clicks, site search, file downloads and video engagement. We review these settings, enabling those that are useful and adjusting those that create noise, such as form interaction tracking that may count form starts inaccurately. Google signals, data sharing settings and the industry category are configured thoughtfully. Data retention for detailed exploration reports defaults to a short period, so we usually extend it to the maximum available for standard properties.

Events and Key Events

In GA4, everything is an event: page views, clicks, form submissions, purchases. Some events are collected automatically, others need to be set up. Events that represent important business outcomes are marked as key events, which is what GA4 now calls what were previously known as conversions in its interface. We work with you to decide which events matter: for a service business, typically successful form submissions, calls from the website, WhatsApp clicks and bookings; for an online store, purchases, along with steps such as add to cart and begin checkout. Each event should have a clear name, ideally following Google’s recommended event names where they exist, such as generate_lead or purchase, and useful parameters, such as form name, service, or value. Events should fire only on genuine completion, for example on a confirmed thank-you page or successful submission response rather than a button click. Marking too many events as key events, such as every page scroll, dilutes reports and can confuse imported conversions in Google Ads, so we keep the list focused. Custom dimensions are registered for parameters you want to report on, such as service type or lead source.

Ecommerce and Cross-Domain Tracking

For online stores, GA4’s recommended ecommerce events, including view_item_list, view_item, add_to_cart, begin_checkout, add_shipping_info, add_payment_info and purchase, with product details and values, power ecommerce reports and funnel analysis. Platforms such as Shopify and WooCommerce offer integrations or plugins that send these events, though they need testing for accuracy, duplicate purchases and correct values including tax and shipping treatment.

When visitors move between domains as part of one journey, for example from your main site to a separate booking system or payment page, cross-domain measurement keeps them in the same session. Without it, journeys break and conversions are attributed to the wrong source, often appearing as referrals from your own payment gateway. We configure cross-domain settings and add payment gateways to unwanted referral lists where appropriate. See funnel drop-off analysis.

Keeping Data Clean

Internal Traffic

Excluding your office and team visits through internal traffic rules and filters.

Developer Traffic

Excluding testing and debug traffic from reports.

Spam and Bots

Monitoring for suspicious traffic beyond GA4’s automatic bot filtering.

Consistent UTM tagging of campaign links also keeps acquisition reports accurate, so email, social and paid traffic are attributed correctly rather than appearing as direct or unassigned visits. We provide a simple UTM naming convention for your team to follow.

Connecting GA4 With Other Tools

Linking GA4 with Google Ads allows website engagement data to appear alongside campaign data, enables GA4 audiences for remarketing, and lets GA4 key events be imported into Google Ads where appropriate. Whether to optimise Google Ads on imported GA4 events or on native Google Ads conversion tags depends on your setup; we avoid counting the same action twice as a primary conversion.

Linking Google Search Console brings organic search query and landing page data into GA4. Merchant Center links support ecommerce insights. BigQuery export, available for GA4 properties, allows raw data analysis for businesses with advanced needs. We set up the links that suit your situation. See Google Ads conversion tracking and SEO reporting.

Consent, Privacy and Data Limits

GA4 should be disclosed in your privacy policy, and where you use a consent banner, consent mode should pass visitors’ choices to Google tags. With consent mode, GA4 can use modelling to estimate some behaviour of users who decline analytics cookies, provided certain thresholds are met. GA4 must not receive personally identifiable information such as names, email addresses or phone numbers, which can accidentally leak through form URLs or event parameters; we check for this. India’s Digital Personal Data Protection Act and its rules, as they come into force, and laws such as the GDPR for international visitors, set obligations around consent and processing; we configure GA4 with these principles in mind and recommend legal advice for specific requirements. It is also important to understand GA4’s limitations: consent choices, ad blockers, cross-device journeys and data thresholds mean GA4 figures will not match your sales system or advertising platforms exactly. We explain these differences so numbers are interpreted sensibly.

Reports That Answer Real Questions

GA4’s default reports are broad and can feel confusing. We customise the reports library to surface what matters to you, such as key events by traffic source, landing page performance, campaign results and ecommerce funnels, and build explorations for deeper questions, such as funnel drop-off, paths and segment comparisons. Audiences can be created for remarketing and analysis, such as visitors who viewed pricing but did not enquire. For regular reporting, Looker Studio dashboards can combine GA4 with Google Ads, Search Console and other data in a clear format for business owners. We focus on a small set of meaningful metrics and explain them in plain language, rather than overwhelming you with every available number. See analytics and conversion optimisation.
