Google Ads conversion tracking traditionally relies on cookies and click identifiers to connect a conversion on your website back to the ad click that led to it. Browser privacy features, cookie restrictions, consent choices and people switching between devices mean that a growing share of conversions cannot be connected this way. When conversions go unobserved, reports understate results and smart bidding has less data to learn from, which can lead to poorer optimisation and budget decisions based on incomplete information.
Enhanced conversions are a Google Ads feature designed to improve this. When someone converts, first-party customer data they have provided, such as an email address, phone number, name or address, is normalised and hashed using a one-way algorithm called SHA-256 and sent to Google with the conversion. Google matches the hashed data against signed-in Google accounts to attribute conversions that cookies alone would miss. Enhanced conversions for web improves measurement of online conversions such as purchases and sign-ups. Enhanced conversions for leads helps connect offline outcomes, such as a lead becoming a sale, back to the ad click, using the hashed data captured when the lead was submitted.
