Lead Source Attribution

Capture where every enquiry came from, keep that information through to your CRM, and finally see which channels, campaigns and keywords bring leads that turn into customers.

‘How Did You Hear About Us?’ Is Not Good Enough

Ask a business owner which marketing channel brings the best leads and you often hear a guess. Sometimes it is a salesperson’s memory, a customer’s casual answer on a call, or whichever platform reports the most clicks. Ad platforms each claim credit for the same sale, analytics shows sessions rather than people, and by the time a lead reaches your CRM, the original source is usually gone. Without that link, you cannot tell whether the money spent on Google Ads, Meta, SEO, WhatsApp or directories is paying off.

Lead source attribution connects the first touch to the final result. When a visitor arrives from a campaign, their source details are captured and stored. When they later submit a form, call, chat or message, that information travels with the lead into your CRM. When the lead becomes a customer, the revenue can be tied back to the channel and campaign that started it. The result is a clear view of which sources produce enquiries, which produce qualified leads and which produce paying customers.

ViV Softech Solution is a website designing and digital marketing agency in Delhi, and we set up lead source attribution as part of our conversion tracking services. It covers the end-to-end design, from website capture to reporting. For the CRM side of lead-source tracking in ad campaigns, see CRM and lead-source tracking, and for judging lead quality, see lead quality and sales outcome analysis.

First Touch, Last Touch and Everything In Between

A customer may first see you on Instagram, later search your name on Google, click an ad, and finally message on WhatsApp. Which one gets the credit? There is no single correct answer. First-touch credit favours channels that create awareness, last-touch credit favours channels that close, and multi-touch models share the credit.

We store both first and last source for each lead, so you can see how channels work together. We avoid false precision: attribution is a guide to relative performance, not an exact accounting of cause and effect, and offline or word-of-mouth influence will always be partly invisible.

How We Build Lead Source Attribution

We begin with a lead journey review. Where do enquiries arrive? Contact forms, landing pages, WhatsApp, phone calls, walk-ins, marketplaces, social messages or email? Which of these reach your CRM, which end up in someone’s inbox and which are noted in a spreadsheet? Many businesses find that half their leads have no recorded source at all. Next we agree a naming system for sources. A consistent UTM convention is the foundation: lowercase names, a fixed list of mediums such as cpc, social, email, organic and referral, and campaign names that identify product, location and month. We create a simple UTM builder sheet so everyone tags links the same way, because inconsistent tags such as Facebook, facebook and fb split one channel into three. On the website, a small script stores the visitor’s first and latest source details in a first-party cookie or local storage, respecting consent choices; see consent-aware analytics configuration. Hidden fields in your forms then pass these values with each submission to your CRM or spreadsheet. We set up the matching fields in the CRM: first source, latest source, campaign, landing page and click ID. For WhatsApp and calls, we use pre-filled message text or tracking links for ads that start chats, and call tracking where appropriate; see phone call conversion tracking. Leads that arrive offline are handled with a required source field for staff and a short dropdown list, so no lead goes in without a source. We connect lead stages and outcomes, such as new, qualified, proposal, won and lost, so that reports can show cost and conversion by source. Where you run Google or Meta ads, offline outcomes can be sent back to those platforms to improve optimisation; see offline conversion import support. Finally we build a report or dashboard showing leads, qualified leads and customers by source, campaign and landing page, with cost per lead where spend is known. We test with real submissions from each channel and check the data lands correctly. We do not promise perfect attribution, because privacy settings, ad blockers and multi-device journeys leave some leads as direct or unknown, but a clear system usually reduces the unknown share and gives far better direction than guesswork.
