Business Category and Service Configuration

Choose the right primary and secondary categories and list your services accurately, so Google understands what you do and shows you for the right searches.

The Wrong Category Sends the Wrong Customers

Categories are among the strongest signals on a business profile. They tell Google what kind of business you are and which searches you may be relevant for. A dental clinic listed as “Health” or a wedding photographer listed as “Photography studio” can miss searches that match their real work, or attract people who want something else.

Business category and service configuration is the careful selection and setup of these fields. ViV Softech Solution, a website designing and digital marketing agency in Delhi, does this within our business profile services.

It is one focused part of profile work. The complete setup of a profile is covered by Google Business Profile setup and optimization. Here we concentrate on the category list, service list and product or service descriptions that sit inside it.

What We Configure

Primary Category

The one that best describes your main business.

Secondary Categories

Relevant extras, without stuffing.

Service List

Clear service names that match what you sell.

Service Descriptions

Short, honest explanations per service.

Products and Menus

Items, prices and photos where allowed.

Attributes

Details such as accessibility, payments and languages.

Accurate Beats Clever

We choose categories that truthfully describe your business. Adding unrelated categories to catch more searches can confuse customers and may break platform rules.

We also avoid promises. Category changes can shift visibility, but results depend on competition, reviews, distance and many other factors.

How We Configure Categories and Services

We start by describing your business the way customers would. We list every service and product, mark which bring the most revenue and which customers ask for most, and note services you want to grow. Then we study the options available. Google offers a large, changing list of categories. We review the categories used by leading local competitors, examining the primary category of the businesses that rank well for your key searches, and compare them against Google’s own list. We pay attention to specificity. A specific category such as “Pediatric dentist” often serves better than a general one such as “Dentist”, when it is true for your business. We choose one primary category, the best description of your core business, and then add secondary categories for important, real offerings. We test fewer secondary categories first, because adding many can dilute focus. We check for categories that do not match your premises: for example, service-area businesses and those without a public storefront have rules about what they can show. Next, the service list. Google lets you add services under each category, with a name, an optional description and an optional price. We use the words customers use rather than internal jargon, group services logically, and keep names short and unique. We do not repeat the same service under several names. We write plain descriptions of one or two sentences that say what the service involves, who it suits and any important condition, without keyword stuffing or unverifiable claims. Where prices can be stated honestly, we include them, or use ranges and starting points that you can honour. For businesses that sell items, we add products or menus with names, photos and descriptions. We then configure attributes where available, such as wheelchair access, online appointments, languages spoken, payment methods and women-led or other labels, only when true. We align the website: each service on the profile should link to or match a service page, and the language on both should be consistent; see business profile consistency. We check that the primary category agrees with your website title tags, schema and other listings; see local business schema and business NAP consistency. After changes, we record the previous settings so they can be reversed, and we monitor impressions, searches by type and calls for several weeks through profile insights; see Google Maps visibility optimization. Category lists change over time, so we recommend a review every six months or when your offering changes. We cannot add categories Google does not offer, and Google may override or remove entries, but a careful setup avoids common mistakes and gives your profile a firm foundation.
